Aveiro & Porto

We travelled from Porto south to Aveiro today.  We decided that it would be easiest to base ourselves in the major centers and visit some of the smaller towns by train. It was a relatively easy trip by regional train.  Aveiro is a cute little town with canals running through the old part of the city. We only needed about half of a day in Aveiro to see everything we wanted to see. When we arrived, we saw a large parade of men on motorbikes, dirt bikes and scooters, dressed in Santa suits, feverishly honking their horns. This seems to be a Portuguese Christmas tradition because we saw it on Madeira as well.  While we were in Aveiro, we browsed a large flea market, with all sorts of interesting old treasures.  It makes me want to redecorate!

We arrived back in Porto just after lunch. Porto is a really nice city. There are beautiful old churches and buildings but it is more open and quieter than Lisbon.  We had time to go up in the tower of the Clerigos Church to get a nice view of the city. We also took a pedestrian bridge across the harbour to get a view of the old city as the sun went down.

We’ll continue to explore Porto tomorrow and then head back to Lisbon tomorrow to explore some of the surrounding towns.
